4 Worst Stomach Exercises

If your really want to flatten & tone your stomach then these exercises shouldn't be in your abs routine. You can substitute them with the exercises i am going to show you to really work your stomach and lose stubborn belly fat.

1. Traditional Sit Up

Where you lie on the floor, knees bent , and sit all the way up to bring your elbows to your knees - may be an exercise you've been doing since your school years. Do you really think that after all these years of doing this type sit up with no change in your stomach, that continuing to do hundreeds of them is actually going to make any difference.

No ot's not.. and on top of this, these sit ups actually put unwanted stress on the lower spine, and if you lock your feet under a bar or something similar then you also increase the hip flexor involvment making this muscle much tighter (which it already is after a long day sitting down) which can lead to poor posture and lower back trouble.

Alternative

Instead swap it for a Stability Ball Crunch - this a very small range of movement, thus hitting your stomach more intensly without putting your lower back at risk.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


2. Crossover Sit-Up

In this sit up variation you bring your left elbow to your right knee and vice versa. The theory is that it works the oblique muscles, which run along the sides of your stoamch area. The reality is that thistype of movement increases spinal compressin and much like the sit up relies heavily on the hip flexors.

Alternative

Instead try a Stability Ball Russian Twist - This exercises will really hot your obliques and stabilisation muscles.

3. Broomstick Twist

Have you seen this?..

somebody standing in the corner of the gym doing hundreds of twists while holding a broom stick across their shoulders or even worse a weighted bar.

This must be the ultimate example of the spot reduction myth, just because you're moving right in that area where the love handles are doesn't mean they are going to melt away with every twist.

Alternative

any other exercise is better than this, reverse crunch, Stability ball Oblique Crunch or even the bicycle crunch, but i would recommend trying the woodchop.

4. Any Ab Gimmick you see on TV

I wish one of those late night informercial stomach exercise contraptions actually worked half as good as the so-called 'experts' say, but these gimmicks don't firm, tone and flatten your stomach - they just waste your monehy.

Instead don't spend any money and do a real workout at home using only your bodyweight to really lose your belly fat.

Remember though that no amount of crunches, sit ups or any other ab exercise should be the focus of your training. These are the least effective exercises to burn your stubborn belly fat.


Try this workout instead

A1. Press-Up x 8-12

A2. Sumo Squat x 12

Perform 3 supersets resting 1 min after each one.

B1. Prisoner Squat x 8-12

B2. Mountain Climbers x 12 each side

Perform 3 supersets resting 1 min after each one.

C1. Reverse Lunges x 8each leg

C2. Jump Squat x 12

C3. Lying Leg Curls x 12

Perform 3 supersets resting 1 min after each one.

and if this doesn't have enough stomach exercises for you finish off with this 6 minute abs workout.

Beginner

A1. Left side Plank x 30sec

A2. Plank x 30sec

A3. Right Side Plank x 30sec

Rest 30sec -repeat 3 times.

Intermediate

A1. Jacknife x 30sec

A2. Lower Body Twists x 30sec

A3. SB Roll Out x 30sec

Rest 30sec -repeat 3 times.
