Is it really possible to burn fat with a 4 minute fat loss workout?

The answer is yes – they are called Tabatas, named after the Japanese researcher Izumi Tabata whom conducted the study which examined the effect of this protocol vs. traditional 60 minutes aerobic workout. The 4 minute exercise group had to bike at 90 RPMs at 170% of VO2max (really hard and intense).  At the end of the 6 week study the 4 minute exercise group had improved both their aerobic and anaerobic fitness – just exercising 4 minutes a day. The 60 minute aerobic group improved their aerobic fitness (not as much as the 4 minute group) and saw no change in their anaerobic fitness.

Now you might be wondering what a Tabata workout is? A Tabata workout is a timed workout that is only 4 minutes long. It consists of 20 seconds of hard (intense) exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, and then you repeat this 8 times. Seems simple but it is really tough.

Now you don’t want to choose exercises that are too technical, take too long or are very complicated. You want to choose exercises that use as much muscle as possible and you can work really intensely doing as many reps as possible in the 20 seconds.

Exercises I recommend are:

  • Bodyweight Squats
  • Push Press
  • Front Squats
  • Kettlebell/ Dumbbell  Swings
  • Alternating Lunges
  • Jump Squats
  • Burpees

Using a stationary bike also works well but treadmills do not as it takes too much time to get your speed up (unless you were going to just jump on and off the treadmill – which I’ve done before but don’t recommend it for  liability reasons). You could also use the rowing machine.
